The Santal is one of the most prominent plainland indigenous groups in Bangladesh.
- Unlike the indigenous groups of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), plainland groups live primarily in the northern and north-western divisions such as Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Mymensingh.
Commonly recognized plainland indigenous groups include:
- Santal: Mostly residing in Rajshahi, Dinajpur, and Rangpur.
- Oraon: Found in the northern districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur.
- Munda: Primarily located in the north-western and southern coastal regions.
- Garo: Concentrated in the Mymensingh, Tangail, and Netrokona regions.
- Khasi: Mostly living in the Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts.
- Manipuri: Primarily located in the Sylhet division.
- Hajong: Residing in the greater Mymensingh and Sylhet regions.
- Mahali, Pahan, and Koch: Other smaller groups living in the northern plain districts.
Note on Hill Groups: For context, groups like the Chakma, Marma, and Tripura are primarily associated with the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) rather than the plainlands
